What is your fondest memory of being in band?

The importance of camaraderie and working together toward a common goal of excellence were what I remember fondly from high school band.

How did band help you become successful in your career and/or life?

I don’t know about successful, but I would say band gave me meaning! I was involved with band in high school, and I’m still going! It was always a good escape to play music with my closest friends. I just always had a drum pad and a pair of sticks around, whether at home or school and to share that passion with other people was a wonderful experience.

Going through the program at Martin, I was very fortunate to know educators who would be able to help out with gigs in the future, which is how I got involved with the Mavs drumline. Similar concept to how I got involved with ODESZA. I just knew the right people at the right time. But knowing the right people would not have mattered if I didn’t put in the work to achieve those things. If there is a standard required from the job at hand for which you are truly passionate about, find a way to go past it. After some time, it will be noticed!

What do you wish someone would have told you when you were a freshman?

It’s okay to fail, just keep going! Practice with a metronome and practice slow!

And please… cut your hair.
