Warrior Update - March 17th

03-17-23

Hello Warrior Band family,

We hope you've had a great spring break! We have three jam-packed weeks with plenty of opportunities to see our students shine, plus our biggest fundraiser for the spring semester.

---

Warrior Band on the Run 5k - EIGHT days away!

At the time of this update, we have 108 runners signed up to participate in the 5k. I know a lot of students have said they'd be running but it appears not many have signed up just yet. Don't wait to get registered...sign up ASAP so we can plan for the pep band on the route!

We all need to make one final push to get people to come participate. I recall the largest turnout we had for the 5k was a little over 400 runners back in 2018. The weather forecast is FANTASTIC so we hope to get lots of people to come out. Share out this link on social media to help steer people to the signup:  https://warriorbandontherun.itsyourrace.com/event.aspx?id=15008

Winter Guard - WGI tomorrow @ Coppell HS

The Winter Guard will be performing at Coppell HS tomorrow at the WGI DFW Power Regional. 42 teams will be competing in the Scholastic A class in the preliminary competition. 15 teams will advance to finals which takes place on Sunday. Should we advance, the performance times would be 9:26am to 11:18am.

After this contest, the next big event we have for the team will be a Friends and Family performance on Thursday, March 30th at 8pm in Gym A at Martin. The performance will be the perfect opportunity to see the show close to home. The performance is open to all and is free to attend.

Lastly, the team will compete at the NTCA Championships the following Saturday on April 1st. With our team's class being the largest in NTCA, they split up the class between Lake Ridge HS and Mansfield HS. That schedule has not been set yet....after this weekend's contest they should be able to prepare the final schedule. Stay tuned for that.

Jazz Band - TCU Jazz Festival

The jazz band will be at TCU's Ed Landreth Hall on Saturday, March 25th at 3:30pm. Their contest performance is free to attend and we hope everyone can come out to support them. The evening concert with the TCU Jazz Ensemble featuring tenor saxophonist Bob Mintzer will be free for our student performers but will cost $10 for anyone else who wants to attend. Bob Mintzer is a big name in the jazz community, having written over 500 compositions and performed with Tito Puente, Buddy Rich, Thad Jones, the Mel Lewis Big Band, Eddie Palmieri, Jaco Pastorius, Mike Manieri, Randy Brecker, and the New York Philharmonic.

Pre-UIL @ Martin - Thursday, March 21st

All wind and percussion students will be doing their Pre-UIL concert and sight reading evaluation this upcoming Thursday night at Martin HS. For the first time in a long time, our junior highs will be joining us. We STRONGLY suggest you follow your band from the stage to the band hall to see the all-new sight reading process.

All students should dress in their concert uniform. Some students may not have time to go home after school and should make sure they bring their concert attire to school in the morning.

The schedule is below. Take note: the warmup time listed for students is NOT the time they should be on campus. We will determine that on Monday and let each ensemble know what time they need to be at school.

With the schedule built the way it is, we will need around ten parents who can help us with logistics:

  • Stage crew - 4-6 adults - you will help Mrs. Bolton get the stage set up for each ensemble. She will be the leader and delegate jobs like "move this chair and stand from row one to row 3". Very simple job and you get to watch all the performances.
  • Sight Reading crew - 3-4 adults - you will be giving out the sight reading music to the ensembles in the band hall once they get seated. As long as you know what each instrument looks like, this is an easy job! You'll get to listen to all the groups as well.

To sign up as a volunteer, we are going to use the band calendar's volunteer feature for the first time!  Here's how you do it:

  • Navigate to the band calendar on the website and click on the Pre-UIL event.
  • The pop-up should have a button that says "view volunteer opportunities"
  • You'll see the two crews with a checkbox next to it. Click on the checkbox and then click on "volunteer"
  • Enter in your name, email address, and phone number to complete the process. This is a feature so we can easily get in contact with whomever has signed up.

Band UIL Concert and Sightreading Evaluation

Literally as I was creating this update...we got our performance times for UIL in three weeks. This evaluation will be taking place at the Arlington ISD CVPA next to AT&T Stadium.

Concert Band - this ensemble will not be performing at UIL. However, these students have been doing sectionals with Symphonic Band on that band's music all semester. Concert band students will be passing off the Symphonic Band music and if they show they are prepared they may be asked to perform with the Symphonic Band.

Symphonic Band - Tuesday, April 11th - performance at 10:10am, sight reading 10:35am

Wind Symphony - Wednesday, April 12th - performance at 3:15pm, sight reading 3:45pm

Wind Ensemble - Friday, April 14th (usually its on Thursday but its new this year) - performance at 3:10pm, sight reading 3:50pm

That's all for this week. Lots of events, we'll see you all very soon!!

Love,
